Intr-un magazin olandez / In a Dutch store

06 Feb

A few months ago I was in a clothes store in the Dutch village where I live. The store is quite big and I was somewhere in the back. All of a sudden I was hit by a heavy toilet smell, to name it like this… neutrally. Shortly afterwards I went to pay for the items I wanted to purchase. I had one person ahead of me, so I had to wait. In front of the cash register, about 2 meters from it, I saw a horrifying scene:

a mother with two children, one of them a baby in a buggy, the other about 2 years old, decided there, in front of the innocent customers, one of them being me, to change the oldest child’s diaper. While he was standing, she took off his pants, his diaper, which explained the nasty smell, cleaned him with wet towels and clothed him again.

Shock and horror I felt, I would have liked to say something, to ask the mother since when such a thing is considered to be normal, for me to stand in that smell and to witness, willing or not, such an activity. I would have wanted to ask the employees of the shop why they are allowing this. But I didn’t say anything, because nobody else did and I couldn’t figure out if I am exaggerating and this is really a normal scene, at least for the Netherlands. What do you think?
